Things That Go On

Whoa! I haven't been here in so long! Here's some news:

Thing One: I graduated! I now have a Bachelor of Science in Human Development.

Thing Two: I'm applying for grad school for the fall of 2012. I'd like to do a Master's of Social Work. The perfect time for grad school is when the economy is total shit, right? Speaking of which...

Thing Three: Guess who can't find a job! Me!!!! Not only are there barely any jobs to which I can apply; when I do find one, I never hear a damn thing! Blerg! What am I going to do?

Thing Four! We've been talking about and looking for a heterosocial companion for Olive. Another bun bun? Perhaps! She'll be way happier with some company according to the House Rabbit Society.

Thing Five: I hate when food or drinks are right on the border of being good or gross. Yeah, that's right. I just said that. It's so hard to know if you should keep eating or not! What the WHAT?!

Wow. Thing Five is about the weirdest "news" ever.

And Now... (drum roll)

Thanks, boingboing! I needed that!

Smaller Than a....

Yesterday, I was listening to "A Way With Words," an NPR show (I listen via podcast) about words and grammar and language-all things that I love. On this particular episode, entitled "Sufficiently Suffonsified,"A Japanese woman called to ask about the expression "happy as a clam." As the hosts, Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett, were talking to her, they asked her about other Japanese colloquialisms. The caller shared that, when describing something that is very small, folks from her area of Japan often say that something is "smaller than a cat's forehead." Isn't that great! You know where this is going, right? I want to start saying that very small things are smaller than a bunny's forehead! That's pretty small!

p.s. This isn't exactly her forehead, but Olive is only so amenable (which is to say, not very).

Overheard in the J and L House

Lisa to Jesse: I feel bad staying up late when Olive has to be in her cage.

Jesse to Lisa: Parents get to stay up later than the kids.

Here's Olive squished behind her cage. She likes it there.
She's getting so big!

New House!

Find some pictures of our new place on flickr!

Plus, Olive is old enough to start eating vegetables! She loves carrots and especially loves the tops. She's so fluffy and cute and we love her soooo much! She's even pooping and peeing where I want her to. Perfect! Now, if only I could get her to like being touched....

What's Keeping Lisa Up At Night?

  • school! My first classes will be a week from tomorrow. Yikes!
  • a baby African Pygmy hedgehog. The babe may be reaching this dump as early as the end of this month!!
  • my birthday party! Preliminary plans include Viva!, friends!, family!, Munchkin, popcorn, Apples to Apples, a delicious birthday cake, booze!
  • a long-overdue trip to Philadelphia to see my sweet friend, Rachel!
This is all veeeeeery exciting!

Burning Question

Is five hours too long to drive for a pet African Pygmy Hedgehog? I think I may have to go to New Hampshire for mine.

Check out this neat little guy. He's a Pygmy Jerboa, a jumping desert rodent found throughout Asia and Northern Africa. Pretty cute, huh? I think I'd like one of my own!

Erika!

I'm really lucky to have made a new friend. Her name is Erika! and she uses lots of exclamation points! Here's some things that make Erika! great: she is funny and smart; she wears either the giantest boots with fuzzy lining or the teeniest sneakers with polka dots to work; she takes pictures of her bruises (like me); she's so interested in the health of the planet that she is always collecting a variety of recyclables from the trash and taking them home to recycle. Periodically, I ask her what she's thinking about. On at least one occasion, it was robots! Robots!

There's lots of other things I could list but I know I sound like I have a total crush on Erika! so I'd better stop now. I'm just excited to have a new friend; plus, its neat when you meet someone and hit it off right away!

p.s. Erika! Don't stop being my friend because I'm creepy. Please!?

Jesse Circa 1987

This is J in 3rd grade for "Crazy Day" at school. Look how hip and nonchalant. I love it. I bet you do, too.

This makes me want to reconsider what I said only days ago: "I have always wanted offspring although there's a good chance I won't have any. I'm convinced I shouldn't since I don't want said offspring to inherit my broken brain."

Christmas Trip to Wisconsin: The Excuse

I don't feel like it right now and I'm very, very busy playing Scramble on Facebook.

Maybe someday soon.

Bribe me with this kitten and the day will come sooner.
I think I'll call her Smidget.

A Baby Penguin and His New Buddy, a Toy Penguin, Will be BFF!

From Daily Mail:
A baby penguin which had to be separated from its family after a greedy sibling continually ate all its food has found companionship - with this stuffed toy.

The penguin - called Pingu - began to lose weight and appeared weak after its bigger relative regularly helped himself to all the fish on offer.

Concerned keepers were forced to remove Pingu from the enclosure, but at just three-weeks-old the penguin was in desperate need of company.

Staff bought a £3.99 toy penguin from the zoo shop which acts as a surrogate sibling to the chuffed chick - who cuddles up to its new friend all day.

Barack, You Really Are Great!

“You have more than earned the puppy that is coming with us to the White House.”

Now, can I have a puppy?
