Re: Talking to Myself

I may hate it when Jesse is right; but at least this time, he's right about something that is helpful: I don't have to take chemistry. This is what I will be taking:
  • History of Photography
  • The West and the World to 1500
  • The Rise of the West: 1500-Present
  • Algebra and Trigonometry
Its going to be a pretty busy semester for me! I've been out of mort. school since 2004 and TC3 since 2003 so hopefully the adjustment will be fairly smooth. I'm definitely looking forward to getting some shit done instead of just floating along feeling like I'm not accomplishing a damn thing. This semester should help me.

I'll work Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and class on Tuesday, Wednesday night and Thursday. Classes start August 24th!

YESTERDAY
Lisa: I accidentally just spit on myself. Do I need to change my shirt?

TODAY
Lisa, examining the floor: I think I just peed.

File this one under "Lisa has no shame" and "Lisa has lost all volition of her body." Gross. And funny. Mostly gross, though.

I'll give you the recipe if you want but we didn't love it so I'm not linking to it. It does look kind of pretty, though.

Talking to Myself

Lately, I'm working really hard on self-soothing. So, for instance, when I start to get all wound up about all the little things going on, and I do mean all, (awful job, not enough money, so sleepy, miss my friends, broken tv, need rear calipers, staying awake, getting along with people, need exhaust work, Prop. 8, the future, yiiiiiikes), I try to soothe myself.

Sometimes, it goes really well and works fabulously. But since I'm trying to teach myself this skill after 28 solid years of being anxious (worry runs in the Mastroberti blood), I often have already gone off the figurative edge wa-a-ay before I even realize what I'm doing. And if I'm not conscious that I'm reverting to my old habit, its pretty hard to implement efforts to bring the process to a screeching halt. As I said, I'm working on it.

Tomorrow, I go to BCC to register for classes and I'm nervous. I was getting all wound up about it and about chemistry, of all things.

J said, "do you even know if you have to take chemistry?"

"No... But I know I won't be able to do it (I'm also trying to stop "awful-izing." Apparently, I'm having a particularly unsuccessful night)."

In a few short hours, I'll know if I have to take chemistry and then the worrying will have been for naught or it will increase....

I'll let you know what happens.

On a side note, please take note of ashleyg's awesome artwork, "Its All Right," that is so perfect for me tonight as I try to reassure myself that tomorrow will go fine, going back to school will be good for me, a new adventure will be good for me, I'm smart enough for chemistry.... Well, I can't talk myself into everything. This print is available in ashleyg's etsy shop. Please check out her "Wonder Boy and Co" and "Even Superheroes Need a Break" and please support independent artists as often as you can. I try to and I certainly should be doing it more often.

Suggested Viewing: The Pygmy Jerboa

Check out this neat little guy. He's a Pygmy Jerboa, a jumping desert rodent found throughout Asia and Northern Africa. Pretty cute, huh? I think I'd like one of my own!

About a Mountaineering Boy

Eric has returned to New York after a three-week outdoor leadership certification course on Washington's spectacular Olympic Peninsula. The photographs I have seen thus far are pretty damn stunning; they make me want to never stay in one place, ever.

He says, "through rivers and snow, mountains and marshes, coastline through alpine, [Eric] is back and wants more." Good on you, boy. I'm a pretty impressed and proud big sister.

Tovah

Today, my beautiful and amazing besty, Tovah, graduated from The Family Institute at Northwestern University with a Masters of Science in Marital and Family Therapy. I am so proud of her and of all of the remarkable work she has done over the past two years.

I truly wish I could have been with her for this most spectacular occasion. I'll start saving now so I can absolutely be in attendance when she receives her PhD.

Congratulations, Toves.

Bad Plant Mother

My ivy has aphids and subsequently, the neighboring shamrock does now, too. Do aphids mean I did something wrong?

Once I'm a horticulturalist, you'll be asking me these questions, no?

Dump, Sweet Dump: The Bathroom

BEFORE: Ugly bathroom. The back white portion of the wall is primed only and not painted. The pink spot is where the primer is peeling. Nice, huh?

AFTER: Ugly bathroom with fresh paint! Complete with new teak bathroom shelving from West Elm. Nice, huh? Thanks for all the painting help, Mom!

Dirt and Worms

I am finally getting around to telling you about my brother's very special birthday dessert for his very special 25th birthday! As you can see, Eric requested Dirt and Worms! We bought our pot (an absurdly too big 5 quarts!) at a local garden center and we even found a plastic trowel that we used for serving this muddy treat!

It was fairly difficult to make dirt and worms fit into a 5 quart pot. The logistics of dealing with that much pudding was complicated, to say the least. Also, I, not surprisingly, continually had the urge to "fance it up (fancy it up)" with things like fresh whipped cream instead of cool whip and chocolate mousse instead of pudding. Since I wanted it to be as close to our childhood memories as possible, I resisted my fancy desires.

I'm happy to say, it was a real hit! Eric was really surprised (I think he may have made the request for this very special dessert and then forgotten about it) and it was fun and nostalgic.

I Hate This Thing

Its hard to clean and its stained but Jesse won't let me throw it away. Plus, he rarely, if ever, cleans this awful piece of shit himself. This makes me mad. Now you know.

Lisa, envious: Andrew's composting?!?!?!?!

(loud sigh)

I don't have anything! I don't have a peahen* and I don't have a compost pile. Stupid compost pile.

*my parents have spotted a peahen that may have taken residence on their property. I am, of course, crossing my fingers and hoping for peachicks.

p.s. I know I'm being ridic; you don't need to tell me.

Quality Time

After a nice dinner at a restaurant we hadn't tried before, Grande's Bella Cucina, I told J I wanted to go home and sit on the couch with him and watch a movie. I just wanted to relax.

So we get home and J puts on Weekend, an old French film that was all style and no plot. I lost interest, eventually went to bed.

Not quite what I had in mind.

Dump, Sweet Dump

J and I are settling into our new apartment, the first floor of an old, minimally maintained house in downtown Binghamton. It is bigger and less expensive; the water pressure is better and we don't pay for heat or hot water. The water also tastes better in the big shitty than it does in Endicott. Although the kitchen is a little too cozy (I had to put the fridge in the hallway to make more room) and has too few drawers, I do now have room to use the pot rack that came from my parents-in-law a couple years ago. The new place has a second bedroom and a pantry.

We've already had to make adjustments. We're not used to traffic, sirens and city lights. Plus, although we do have a small yard, it is nothing like our lush, beautiful, well-kept lawn that we're accustomed to. I've already got my dad working on some grass seed to try to help our patchy, sickly-looking yard.

Nothing in this old, unkempt house is level. When you open the fridge, the door flies and slams against the trash can; beer bottles and other unattended items fall off the kitchen counters and crash to the floor. You have to keep an eye on things or you may have a mess on your hands.

We still have alot to do before we'll be showing pictures but I wanted to give you an idea of how things are going. Hopefully, we'll be willing to show you around soon but don't hold your breath. See Overheard in the J and House: A Moving Edition for some explanation.

Today, in Racist Cops

NYT:
The slain officer, who was assigned to patrol housing projects and was wearing plain clothes, was shot in the arm and chest after a team of three other plainclothes officers in a car saw him chasing a man on East 125th Street between First and Second Avenues with his gun drawn, Mr. Kelly said.

Sources identified the officer who fired the shot as Andrew Dunton, a four-year veteran of the force from Long Island...

The shooting has once again raised questions again about departmental procedures involving communications among plainclothes officers — particularly those in different units — as well as issues of race.

Officer Edwards was black, and Officer Dunton is white.
