Life is Random and Unfair; Life is Pandemonium

As the title to this post (and the lyrics to a 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee song) suggests, there are a variety of changes happening in and around the J and L house. I'm going to try to give a thorough and long overdue update.

I've finished three weeks of school at Binghamton University. Generally, people fall into one or more of the following categories: they are really nice; they are really pretentious; they are from Long Island. Also, I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MANY UGGS! I haven't quite figured out if/where I fit in. Maybe I need my own Uggs. Maybe not.

Regarding the classes: they are incredibly difficult. In my first Intro to Human Development class, Dr. Merriwether told me and my 89 classmates that most of us will receive a C in her class. YIKES! That is not good enough!

There is a lot of controversy going on about BU in general and their basketball program specifically; and the controversy, unfortunately, involves my program (read about how this convoluted situation affects me in this week's NY Times article). Basically, my program, Human Development, will be getting exceedingly difficult to overcompensate for how easy it used to be (the dummy basketball players were funneled into HDEV because the program wasn't overly difficult and they needed to get good grades).

So, after spending a good portion of the past three weeks freaking out about how difficult school is going to be and about how I can't attend all the necessary review sessions and study groups because of my work schedule (not to mention the many extra hours of studying I don't have time to do in order to keep up), Jesse and I decided it'd be best if I give notice at bagel town. Granted, I haven't been thrilled with bagel town in a long while, but the impetus to move on so abruptly sincerely was my need to thoroughly focus on school.

Unfortunately, eliminating my (exceedingly minimal) income will certainly have repercussions. At this point, we're concentrating on how important it is for me to do well and finish my B.S. so I can get a real job. One of the more unfortunate repercussions is that I have to (further) postpone the arrival of my baby hedgie. Boooooooooooooooo!

So, I've covered work and school. Now, onto a sad note. Our close friends Emily and Philip, who have been having some pretty serious marriage difficulties for a while, have split up. If that's not bad enough, she's from Pittsburgh and he is from Rochester. That means that when they split up, they both leave town. It's so sad; I know I'm still processing it, so I can't imagine being in either of their situations. It hits me occasionally; I can't believe it's true. We had so many great times with them and it's hard to deal with the fact that we'll likely never be with them in the same capacity again.

I know I've covered a lot; so much has happened all at once! I know I am hoping for some respite soon; I am sure J is, too.

Some good news: J has been back to work since Tuesday and is healing nicely after his hernia repair surgery. I'm still doing all the manual labor around here, but that's nothing new. Ha! I am hoping he'll start driving again this weekend so I can stop hauling his gimpy ass around (again, that's nothing new)! I kid. You know I love my husby!

Overheard in the Bagel Shop

a man missing an eye and wearing an eye patch comes into the bagel shop. he is a regular customer and, even though i've worked there only a couple of months, i know he wears the eye patch to cover his empty eye hole.

my co-worker, a bagel shop employee for 4 years, to eye patch man: So, is this your Halloween costume?

Sheesh.

I Can't Say These Things Aloud at Work

so I'm recounting them now for your enjoyment. More, no doubt, will follow.
  • you probably think you're being encouraging and supportive when you tell me I should go back to school because I am working a ridiculous job. You don't need to remind me that I'm too good for this perfect-for-high-school-girls-and-retired-women-job. For now, this job serves its purpose and you should be happy I'm here to smile cordially and chew the fat with you. I'm nicer than most....
  • a plain bagel toasted with butter, cream cheese, double american cheese, ham, sausage and and bacon is disgusting. Why are you eating such a large quantity of trash?
  • some things are too expensive; I agree with you. However, I have no ability or authority to do anything about a $0.72 slice of cheese.
  • I'll get to you when I get to you.
  • I've been up since 4 a.m. Cutting me a smidge of slack would be much appreciated.

Would You Like That Toasted?

I am in my third full week at the bagel shop; things are going well and I have been paid twice! Everyone is really nice and I have received compliments from the owners, the manager and some customers (The best compliment I got from my last employer: "Well, I guess you didn't screw things up as much as I thought you would.") I have been getting to work early which has always been excruciatingly difficult for me. Soon, I will be opening the shop on Wednesdays; at which point, I'll need to be in at 5:45 a.m. which frightens me.

I am feeling pretty good and am happy at the bagel shop. I don't care that I'm not making much money; I am just happy to be busy, meeting new people and working hard.
