Dirt and Worms
It was fairly difficult to make dirt and worms fit into a 5 quart pot. The logistics of dealing with that much pudding was complicated, to say the least. Also, I, not surprisingly, continually had the urge to "fance it up (fancy it up)" with things like fresh whipped cream instead of cool whip and chocolate mousse instead of pudding. Since I wanted it to be as close to our childhood memories as possible, I resisted my fancy desires.
I'm happy to say, it was a real hit! Eric was really surprised (I think he may have made the request for this very special dessert and then forgotten about it) and it was fun and nostalgic.

The Spot
My brother, Eric, left this morning on a 22-day Wilderness Exploration Leadership class in Olympic National Park and on the Olympic Peninsula. This trip will be much different than last year's trip to Anchorage, Alaska: no hostels, no trips to town, no lunches at weird restaurants in buses. This is 22 days of wilderness. He is thrilled.
Find out where he is with the Spot tracking device the group is carrying. Since the Spot uses Google maps, you can also switch to terrain, satellite, or hybrid views. 8 minutes ago, he was west of the Sarasota Passageway.

Quick and Tasty Italian Sausage Soup with Vegan Substitutions
I recently made Italian Sausage Soup with some fresh, local sausage. It was so delicious! The recipe is from Slashfood; it is so speedy and requires minimal knife work. I've included the specific ingredients I used in our soup in parentheses. Vegan suggestions follow.
- 8 ounces hot or sweet turkey Italian sausage (I used the fresh sausage from a local farm)
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced*
- 2 cups fat-free, less sodium chicken broth
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic and oregano (We used Muir Glen's Diced Tomatoes with Basil and Garlic)
- 1/2 cup uncooked small shell pasta (try 60 % Whole Grain Organic Small Vegetable Shells from Eden Organic)
- 2 cups baby spinach leaves
- 2 tablespoons grated fresh Parmesan or Romano cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
While the sausage is browning, start a separate pot and boil water for pasta. Salt the water and cook the pasta until al dente.
Add broth and tomatoes to the saucepan with the sausage in it and bring to a boil over over high heat. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in spinach until wilted.
Add desired amount of pasta to the bottom of a soup bowl and ladle sausage soup on top. Sprinkle each serving with cheese and basil.
*garlic not included in original recipe
Tovah! Mikus! Eric and Tiffany!! Try this recipe with Tofurky Italian Sausage and your preferred brand of vegetable broth. Sprinkle with nutritional yeast. I think you'll like it. Will you try it? You should.

Come for Dinner If You Don't Mind Wet Feet
Last Monday, I was making spanakopita; we were expecting my brother, Eric (the Boy), and his girlfriend, Tiffany, along with our friends, Sung and Jessica. I was doing lots of prep work: stemming and chiffonade-ing pounds of fresh spinach, mincing garlic, chopping onions. Next, I sauteed the produce and transferred the mixture a strainer. I was washing my sautee pan when the sink started to drain really slowly. I turned on the disposal hoping to solve the problem. All of a sudden, water was gushing from behind the washing machine! I turned everything off in time to see water rushing all over the floor. Ack!
I threw some towels on the floor to dry some of the water and got on the phone to maintenance. Of course, I was starting to panic a bit. I wasn't worried about the Boy and Tiffany coming over for a soggy dinner party but I don't know Sung and Jessica very well and I wanted things to go well. After a few minutes, maintenance made it up to the apartment and told me how good the food smelled. I huffed and told them I was making dinner for my friends and really hoped they could figure out what was wrong. They asked to borrow my plunger (apparently the maintenance guys don't have their own) and made an attempt to unclog the sink. Surprise! No luck.
A 3rd maintenance guy was called and he decided an actual plumber had to be called. I tried not to get too wound up; I struggled with my phyllo and waited for Jesse to get home. I knew it woudn't work to see if we could pack up and take dinner to Sung's house since we had to wait for the plumber so I called Tiffany to see if they had a table they could bring. It clear and warmish out and not a bad night to eat on the lawn.
Jesse got home and tried to calm me down and convince me that things were fine: the Boy and Tiffany were bringing a table and chairs, Sung and Jessica were bringing chairs, rain was not in the forecast.
Six o'clock rolled around and the plumber and his matching cohort arrived and brought industrial-strength sucking appliances. Next, Sung and Jessica arrived and the four of us sat outside and drank a Bully Hill Chardonel and waited for the Boy and Tiffany. Meanwhile the plumbers sucked and sucked and sucked some more. I periodically checked on their progress and the progress of the spanakopita. When E and T arrived, we got situated outside and enjoyed some of the Boy's homemade salsa.
While the big and little plumbers continued sucking unsuccessfully, we had our spanakopita and the Boy's salad and Key Lime pie. The plumbers left around 8 or 8:30 and said they would return tomorrow and possibly have to go into the wall to complete the project.
The evening was nice, the food was good and the company was great. The biggest problem was having to go to bed with a kitchen-full of dirty dishes, which I hate as much as I hate Palin. The next day, when got home from work, the plumber was back and still sucking. He finally dislodged whatever gross obstruction that impeded my kitchen cleaning; thankfully he didn't have to go into the wall. As my dad and others would say, "All's well that ends well."

Happy Anniversary, Middle Ages Brewing Company
Sunday, August 3, Jesse, the boy and I headed up to Sewercuse to the Middle Ages Brewing Company for their 13th anniversary party. The weather was warm but breezy and the sky was clear and beautiful. It was a terrific day to sit in the park, drink some beer (their 13th Anniversary Ale was an Imperial Wheat that the boys enjoyed) and listen to some live music.
We were all really relaxed and it was great to catch up with the boy. We had in depth talks of beer, NY grown hops, the environment and the future with our respective partners. Sometimes, I forget that the boy is an adult until we're having serious talks about his strong, loving adult relationship with Tiffany and their future together.
