LUSH Helps Protect Orangutans. You Can, Too!

Maybe you think I'm fussy because I don't want mass market cosmetics, because my preferred purveyor of all things soapy is LUSH. There is good reason for my insistence. For instance, LUSH is in the process of eliminating all palm oil from all of its products because the environmental and social impact of using it is enormous!

During a recent trip to Indonesia to explore the palm oil industry, we witnessed firsthand the grave impact it has on Asian rainforests, wildlife and indigenous people - massive deforestation, Indigenous peoples being forced from their homes and the orangutans being pushed to the brink of extinction.

As our beliefs are at the heart of everything we do, we knew that we had to take action immediately and minimize our use of palm oil, (and hopefully save some rainforests along the way). The cosmetics industry uses approximately 6-7% of the world’s palm oil, and it’s a main ingredient in many soaps. Upon our return from Indonesia we rushed back to the LUSH labs and for almost a year worked in partnership with a leading UK soap-base manufacturer, Kay’s, to develop the world’s first commercially available palm-free soap base. Cracking this formula wasn’t easy, but after a lot of sweat we’ve finally got it right.

LUSH North America has now switched all of its soap production to this new palm-free base, and we are also using palm-free glycerin. Our end goal is to remove palm oil from all of our products, and we are currently investigating our surfactants which might be palm oil derived. Here at LUSH we understand that if the rainforests have any chance of surviving, retailers are going to have stop putting palm oil into their products.

As long as companies continue using palm oil, the Indonesian and Malaysian governments will allow the clearing and burning of rainforests to develop new plantations. Oil palm trees are so lucrative that governments and businesses only see dollar signs.

It seems to us that the only way to really tackle this problem is if palm oil becomes less popular. Because so many people want to use palm oil, it simply cannot be produced in a truly sustainable manner. Lush is hoping other business will move away from palm oil, which is why we are willing to share our expertise with anyone that wants to take similar steps. We are proud of our new formula for our palm-free soap base, which is why we want to share it with other soap manufactures. more...

See. I'm not fussy. I'm socially responsible. Do some research; maybe (hopefully) you'll want to make a similar stand with your money.

75 Days 'til Christmas

J and I are cutting back on our Christmas budget this year ::muffled sob::. Probably most people are doing the same thing. Because of the tight budget, we have to be much more discriminating about our purchases. I've started "window shopping" via the inkernet. Today, I came across the following disturbing item available for purchase at A + R:
Baby Hand Soaps in a variety of skin tones

Despite their creepiness, I kind of love them and want to gift them to equally snr people on my list. Hilarious!

Many thanks to mom and dad Godell for the pretty, pretty sheets and comforter for our new bed from my mum and dad. We are blessed to have such generous, loving families.

What He Said

From Slog:

This—the Bristol and Levi wedding registry—has to be a joke.

But then, this whole Palinightmare has to be a joke. Right? RIGHT?!?

(Regardless, I celebrate the "operation camo full bedskirt.")

Their JCPenney registry is hilarious and is complete with a camo diaper bag, American Flag Wall Art, and a meat grinder. According to the registry, the wedding date is November 4, Election Day! It'll be a busy day in the Palin household.

Anniversary Brunch at the Carriage House

Jesse and I had a really great, fun day yesterday. We started by celebrating our 2nd anniversary (Sept 30) by having brunch with my family at the Carriage House in Ithaca. The atmosphere is really relaxed and the food is amazing: Brie stuffed french toast with fresh fruit, baby portabella omelets, grilled heirloom tomatoes and cheddar on house-baked muti-grain bread. It is all terrific. My sister, Lauren, generously treated everyone!

My parents surprised us with a fantastic anniversary present: a new queen size bed! I'm so excited to pick it out and have so much space. I am married to a bed hog who occupies 2/3 of the bed on a night when he's being generous. I am relegated to a portion of the bed that is hardly wider than my bod. When we get the new bed, I am pretty sure the proportion of space I am allotted will remain the same yet my proportion will be wonderfully larger. Yay! Its a great prez and was a complete surprise.

After brunch, Jess and Lauren and I headed to the farmer's market and packed our canvas bags with enough produce to nearly fill the fridge: Yummy Peppers (this is the variety, not a description), French Breakfast Radishes, Honeycrisp apples, cauliflower, broccoli, garlic, carrots, onions, parsley, basil.

We made a couple more stops in Ithaca before dropping Lauren off at home and heading back home. After unpacking all of our produce, I started our dinner: Bleu Cheese Cauliflower Soup and fresh artisan bread from the market. It was incredibly tasty; a certain addition to our favorites.

Afterwards, we took a long (apx. 3 mile) walk with our friends, Philip and Emily. Our day was so full and fun; I was entirely exhausted.

Baby, You Can Drive My Car[s]

From Truthdig:
Forget houses, John and Cindy McCain have 13 cars to Barack and Michelle Obama’s one. McCain would point out that most of the vehicles are in his wife’s name, but still, you can’t call the other guy an elitist when you sleep with one.

Things I've Bought That I Love: Magnetic Measuring Spoons

Guys! Guess what I bought that's great! Progressive Magnetic Measuring Spoons. Here's why they're so neat:
  • There's a magnet embedded into the center of each spoon. When the group is stuck together, it may help to solve the problem of the spoon that's missing after being separated from the rest of the group. It doesn't solve the problem of the Tbsp. slipping into the garbage disposal and (oops) coming out in pretty gnarled shape because magnets aren't magic. They're just magnetic. Handy!
  • These magnetic spoons can also be stuck to your stove, appliance or reactive abstract art. Convenient!
  • The spoons are double ended. One end is slim enough to fit into most spice jars. The nice thing about a double-ended measuring spoon is that you have a side for the dry ingredients and a side for the wet ingredients and nary the two shall meet and gunk things up. Not gunky!
I got my set from Now You're Cooking on the Ithaca Commons. You can find a list of national retailers here or use the world wide inkerweb to buy online or check your local, independent gourmet/kitchen shop.

The Iceorb from Fusion Brands

I've been reading CNET's Appliances and Kitchen Gadgets blog since Jesse told me about it several months ago. Most of the gadgets included in the blog (and, perhaps, in kitchen innovations, in general) come in one of three categories: 1) a quintessential luxury item with a matching price tag, 2) a complete gimmick or 3) a basically traditional item with some additional gimmick(s).

On August 25, they blogged about the Iceorb by Fusion Brands which looks like it belongs in the third category but also looks pretty damn neat in a useful way. Here is a list why (from the product website):
  • Makes 21 cubes of ice on a vertical wall
  • Stores up to 51 cubes - airtight and odor free
  • Chills wine and other beverages in a bottle
  • Use as a cooler to keep cold foods fresh while serving
  • Use lid under orb while serving to catch condensation
  • Spill-proof design
  • Top rack dishwasher safe
Traditional ice cube trays can be problematic. Trays placed precariously can topple and create a mess if the water is not yet frozen. Items placed on top of the tray can freeze to the ice if, again, the water is not frozen before things are stacked. Additionally, if your freezer's pretty full (who's freezer isn't?), there's just not that much room for more than a tray or two. The Iceorb looks like it could solve a whole bunch of issues.

Find a neat flash video here.

Sam's Club, You're Not Fooling Me

I originally titled this post, "Sam's Club, We're Not As Dumb As You Think We Are," but that would, unfortunately, be erroneous when taking the entire population into consideration.

Sam's Club is pretending that this polystyrene cup is green when the only green involved is the green the stockholders save on fuel since they're shipping such a light cup.

Why aren't they reminding the user to recycle it? Polystyrene is recyclable.

Turkey Hill, Why Must You Taunt Me

From Turkey Hill:
Turkey Hill’s brand new Venice™ Premium Ice comes straight from the water-filled canals of Venice through the rolling farmland of Lancaster County to your freezer at home. The light, fruity flavors of Venice Ice are easy to scoop and enjoy but difficult to put down.
Sounds refreshing and delicious, right? You know what sounds even better? Their Pomegranate Blueberry with Acai Venice Ice. YUM. Pomegranate Blueberry is one of my flavor combinations and the sweet confection beckons me from its icy-cold freezer home. YUM.

So what's the problem? It is chock full of high fructose corn syrup which I avoid as much as I can. Turkey Hill, you are a cruel seductress.

Things I've Bought That I Love: Bon Voyage Handbag

Last Monday, I was at Eddie Bauer and found the greatest little bag called the Bon Voyage Handbag. Since my everyday bag is enormous, I tend to shove all sorts of shit in there: hardcover books, laptop, notebooks, a GOOD magazine, my camera, Jesse's camera and Gorillapod, Gin Gins, directions to many of the local registrars offices and a couple regional air cargo facilities, you name it. In a pinch, I also have toe tags and a pair of nitrile gloves. I love my bag but I often find myself wanting to leave it in the car or at home because it is so cumbersome to lug it around. Inevitably, I leave it and then I need it after all and.... ::huff::

So, you can imagine my sheer delight when I found the Bon Voyage Handbag. Its a mere 9" x 6 1/2" and has more compartments and pockets and key fobs and credit card sleeves than I'll ever manage to fill. Well, that's probably a lie but you know what I mean. Its pretty cabernet nylon and has an adjustable strap so I can wear it across my chest. There's appropriate room for my wallet, sunglasses, keys, cellphone, itsy camera and some mini bottles of booze. Its perfect for some cash and my ID when we go to a bar; its perfect when we're in little shops chock full of fragile merchandise and the space is tight and I'm trying to avoid breaking something by bumping into it with my tremendous sack of love.

The possibilities are aplenty.

A Sink Your Sous Chef Will Thank You For

This is about as extravagant as it gets, I know; but check out this amazing prep sink from Kohler.
From Appliances & Kitchen Gadgets:
The prep sink is a narrow stainless steel slit that you install in your counter wherever you do your chopping. It's built on a slanted angle, so when you toss your food scraps into it and press the button, they'll wash neatly down the drain. You can press the button for a quick rinse, or for bigger scraps, you can kick it up a notch with Kohler's Cynchronous rinsing system, which synchronizes the rinse and garbage disposal cycles. A solid blue light lets you know that the rinse cycle is on, and a flashing blue light indicates that the synchronized garbage disposal is working.
I'll probably never be able to indulge myself with such a luxury but this is an excellent example of why the concept of the "dream kitchen" exists.

My New Toy Sucks

The obsessive compulsive portion of my personality is so excited. Today, the UPS man brought us our Dyson Root 6 hand-held vacuum cleaner. This vacuum is an animal. It sucks things that are inches away; its as loud as our upright vacuum. Three long hours after getting it, I was charged and wildly sucking up spider webs and dust and lint. It was great. Six minutes after that, the Dyson was sucked out and back on the charger. Sad. But its only three more hours of waiting for six more minutes of web-sucking bliss. I can hardly wait.

Time is on Your Eye

Timex and Core77 recently held a global watch design competition, "Timex2154: The Future of Time" and the runner-up is the TX54, a translucent watch, complete with Indiglo, that can be worn on your thumbnail.

There's no question that the TX54 seems gimmicky and silly but check out another runner-up: the Sublimex is a contact lens that occasionally flashes an image of the time which is interpreted by the brain. The flash is so fast, the brain isn't conscious of how the information was attained; the wearer just knows what time it is.
If that's not bleeding edge, I don't know what is.

Don't Make the Same Stupid Mistake I Did

I have some serious business to discuss. Don't buy this food pro
even if you're trying to save space and are sure "its probably sufficient." It is too small.

What you really need is this food pro
which is nearly monster-sized. 11 cups. 88 glorious ounces. Probably big enough to puree the little one. Too big is better than too small.
