Things That Go On
Whoa! I haven't been here in so long! Here's some news:
Thing One: I graduated! I now have a Bachelor of Science in Human Development.

Thing Two: I'm applying for grad school for the fall of 2012. I'd like to do a Master's of Social Work. The perfect time for grad school is when the economy is total shit, right? Speaking of which...
Thing Three: Guess who can't find a job! Me!!!! Not only are there barely any jobs to which I can apply; when I do find one, I never hear a damn thing! Blerg! What am I going to do?
Thing Four! We've been talking about and looking for a heterosocial companion for Olive. Another bun bun? Perhaps! She'll be way happier with some company according to the House Rabbit Society.
Thing Five: I hate when food or drinks are right on the border of being good or gross. Yeah, that's right. I just said that. It's so hard to know if you should keep eating or not! What the WHAT?!
Wow. Thing Five is about the weirdest "news" ever.

...And?
For all intents and purposes, I've been gone for weeks. The primary reason for my absence was/is an inability to find a comfortable position to sit and blog. The pain from my herniated disc has gotten markedly worse since my initial MRI in July, and sitting and typing is really, really uncomfortable. Previous treatments have yielded no relief. Next is another MRI (Yay! It's going to cost $500!); hopefully, it will provide the orthopedic surgeon the information he needs to make me less miserable. Cross your fingers!
In the meantime, school starts tomorrow and my internship at Planned Parenthood (not the Southern Tier AIDS Program; I am so behind on updates!) starts Tuesday. Not surprisingly, I feel totally unprepared.
Maybe looking at baby Frankie trying to eat me will make me feel better? Let's try.

Re: Re: Fall 2010
My Fall 2010 grades were... not as good as I would have liked.
- Social Justice: B+
- Holistic Health Practices: A
- Child Welfare Policy: B
- Community Leadership & Development: A
My B in Child Welfare Policy was a huge annoyance and an even bigger disappointment. Boo.

Re: Fa La La La La: A Local Christmas Experiment
Hello and Happy New Year! I have been remiss in updating you on our Christmas Experiment. 'Tis late, but here we go. J and I were very successful in our Christmas Experiment (though, more accurately, it should be called a Christmas Challenge, as it was not really an experiment). We had a couple of challenges for ourselves as we embarked on our holiday shopping. Here are the updates:
- All of the gifts for our family were purchased locally or regionally. Only one single gift was bought at a "big box" store. The remaining gifts came from Sea Hag, Sam the Beer Man, Tom's, River Read Books, Ithaca Coffee Company, Laveggio Roasteria, Nyala Farm Alpacas, The Petal Pusher, Silk Oak, Spirit & Kitsch, Homespun Boutique, Creature Comforts, the vendors of the Otsiningo Park Farmers Market
- The two or three friend gifts that came from the internet were purchased from independent artisans selling their stuffs on etsy.
- All gifts were wrapped in paper purchased before we decided to take this challenge or in repurposed paper.
We did a great job on this challenge, and we got to know our local shop owners, farmers, artisans a little better. We really enjoyed our Buy Local Christmas.

Overheard in the J and L House: A Bunny Edition
Lisa to Jesse, who is closely watching Olive: Well, does she have anything to say?
Jesse, still inspecting the bunny: I don't really know.... She's mumbling.

Re: For This, We are Grateful
This is a re-post with some italicized augmentations. I'm thankful for so many of the same things that I'm recycling. Yay, recycling!

Comeback Kid
I've been removed for a bit. Too long. So much is going on. The last couple of weeks of school were way more excruciating than I expected, and I've had a lot of additional trouble with my back. Most recently, I've been so uncomfortable that I couldn't find a comfortable sitting position that lasted for more than a few seconds. Friday, I had Cortisone injections in my lumbar spine to try to treat the pain related to my bulging disc.
I am finally starting to feel a bit better, and I hope to be able to catch you up on the following things:
- the update on my Spring 2011 internship
- the results of our Local Christmas Experiment
- Olive the dog?
- more?
Don't go away. I'm coming back soon. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of Olive's first snowball.

I Stayed up until 10:30 in the Morning and it was Worth It
I wrote my first research brief (my first school-induced overnighter), also known as a position paper, for my Community Leadership and Development class. As I frequently do, I wrote about LGBTQ kids, specifically, LGBTQ youth and suicide prevention. The first draft was worth 30 points. Here is the front cover with grade. "Outstanding in every way. You're done," which means I've got no rewrites to do!
Read the (outstanding!) paper here.

Fa La La La La: A Local Christmas Experiment

Since I'm still in school, and we have limited monies for Christmas gifts, we're trying some new things:
- J and I aren't gifting to each other. Boo.... I guess my present from J is ... school? Blerg.
- We're planning to buy all our gifts locally/regionally. This is savvy in regards to money and in regards to the environment. It means no Amazon, no extra monies for shipping and no carbon footprint for the transportation of an item from wherever it comes from to Broad Street, no disappointment if the UPS driver leaves a note instead of a package. Not only will we be supporting the local economy, we'll be able to give slightly larger gifts since we won't be paying for shipping from 5, 8, 12 different online purveyors.
- Additionally, we'll be patronizing local shops, bookstores, farmers markets and craft shows and only hitting the big box stores if we have to.
- We're not buying any wrapping paper this year. We'll be using what we have or what we find or what we can repurpose.
J and I both really love giving totally unique gifts; hopefully we'll be able to find and gift neat things despite the (lack of) local shopping options. I suppose I can concede on gift amazingness provided that we're being better to the planet and the local economy. If it goes well, we'll probably try it again!
