Guns Don't Kill People

Parents who allow their 8-year-olds to play with an Uzi kill people.

From Fox News:
Westfield, MA -- An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair.

The boy lost control of the weapon while firing it Sunday at the Machine Gun Shoot and Firearms Expo at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club, police Lt. Lawrence Vallierpratte said.

As the boy fired the Uzi, “the front end of the weapon went up with the backfire and he ended up receiving a round in his head,” police Lt. Hipolito Nunez said. The boy died at a hospital.

The boy’s father and older brother were also there at the time, a gun club member and school official said. Francis Mitchell, a longtime member and trustee of the club, said he was told the boy’s father was supporting his son from behind when the shooting happened. …

The event ran in conjunction with C.O.P Firearms and Training. “It’s all legal & fun — No permits or licenses required!!!!” reads the ad, posted on the club’s Web site.

Guns Don't Kill People

10-foot Reticulated Tiger Pythons kill people.

From WAVY:
Virginia Beach, VA -- A young Navy wife is dead, strangled by her own pet python. The python, named Diablo was euthanized a couple days after the attack.

Police say the woman's husband came home Tuesday night and found his wife, 25-year-old Amanda Black, dead on the floor and the snake, a 10-foot reticulated Tiger Python named Diablo, was missing.

Animal control officers responded to the townhouse off Witchduck Road and found the snake hiding behind another snake pen with a Boa Constrictor in it, only a few feet away from the body of the owner it had just suffocated.

Know what doesn't kill? Baby six banded armadillos. Additionally, they're oh-so-cute and therefore not at all hideous.

Its No Secret That I Love the Obamas

But, damn, I kind of hate how constantly photogenic they are. Sheesh.

From The Huffington Post:
The Obamas' Greatest PDA Moments and The Obama Anniversary Album

From Time magazine, Callie Shell's gorgeous, thoughtful collection of Obama candids.
Please notice her notes and comments on each image. The photographs of Obama enjoying a solitary moment are particularly poignant.

Overheard in the J and L House....

Again.

Lisa:
My ear hurts.

Jesse: That's what happens when you put a giant hole in your ear.

Today in Box News: I'm in a Box

So Long, Bachelor Chic!

Our pretty, pretty new comforter came today! The nicest part of our pretty new comforter and sheets and our incredibly comfortable, roomy new bed is that we picked them out. No more bachelor bedroom for us!

I Hate Packing

I also hate the way J packs. Its official: I'm awful.

David Sedaris on the Undecideds

The New Yorker:
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

I mean, really, what’s to be confused about?

This Week in Facebook News

From BBC:
CROYDON, South London-
A man has been jailed for life for stabbing his wife to death over a posting she made on the social networking site Facebook.

Wayne Forrester, 34, told police he was devastated that his wife Emma, also 34, had changed her online profile to "single" days after he had moved out.

The Old Bailey heard Forrester drove to her home in Croydon, south London, and attacked the mother-of-two.

He stabbed her with a kitchen knife and a meat cleaver on 18 February.
I wonder what Forrester would have done if she was interested in "networking."

I found ZooBorns just in time. Mom Godell is already looking for Christmas ideas and I couldn't come up with much. Now I know what I want: a six banded armadillo.

UPDATE: Jesse says that ZooBorns is not a catalog.

Re: I Had My First (5 mm) Dermal Punch Today

During the piercing, literally, as soon as my ear crunched, I thought, "I am never getting another dermal punch again." It has been a mere 10 days and already I'm considering having the other ear done. It will be several months before the left ear is healed and thus at least a few months before I can do the right ear but I really love how it looks.

I'm really excited to have the option to pierce at whim again. During my years in mort. school and the subsequent years at the funeral home, I was required to be professional, conservative, appropriate for public consumption. I hated it. Now, I can have my druthers and my dermal punch, too.

Tina Fey on Sarah Palin: Not Since "Sling Blade" Has There Been a Voice Like Hers

I'm a couple of days late with this clip of Tina Fey talking to Letterman about doing Sarah Palin. You know I love Tina Fey; Tina Fey doing Palin is utter bliss. Check out this clip of Fey on Friday's Letterman.

Really, Amy Poehler? Really!??

No, really, Amy Poehler. I completely heart you. Please don't leave.

What He Said

Dan Savage:
Why didn’t NBC insist on Palin sitting down for a real, substantive interview—or, better still, calling a full press conference—as a condition of Palin appearing on SNL tonight? Candidates don’t go on Letterman, Leno, SNL, The Daily Show, et al, to take a break from the campaign trail. Comedy programs are stops on the campaign trail. Palin is running from the press, refusing to answer any questions, lying her ass off on the stump, and attacking the people who could call her on those lies—reporters, news anchors, cable news networks—at her rallies. So why the fuck should NBC allow Palin to reap the political rewards of an appearance on SNL if Palin isn’t willing (or able) to answer questions from NBC news reporters?
And now, ladies and gentlemen, Sarah Palin/Tina Fey/Sarah Palin:

Powell Endorses Obama

From The NYT:
WASHINGTON—Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president on Sunday morning as a candidate who was reaching out in a “more diverse and inclusive way across our society” and offering a “calm, patient, intellectual, steady approach” to the nation’s problems.

The endorsement, on the NBC public affairs program “Meet the Press,” was a major blow to Senator John McCain, who has been a good friend of Mr. Powell for decades. Mr. Powell, a Republican, has advised Mr. McCain in the past on foreign policy....
Powell, like many others, is concerned by the McCain/Palin supporters:
Mr. Powell, who is of the pragmatist camp and has been critical of the Bush administration’s conduct of the war, was said by friends in recent months to be disturbed by some of the neoconservatives who have surrounded Mr. McCain as foreign policy advisers in his presidential campaign.
This is great news for Obama. We're rapidly nearing the end of the campaign and there's no question that anything that comes from McCain at this point will be increasingly absurd and far fetched. Powell's endorsement will no doubt only boost Obama's already sizable lead.

Quick and Tasty Italian Sausage Soup with Vegan Substitutions

I recently made Italian Sausage Soup with some fresh, local sausage. It was so delicious! The recipe is from Slashfood; it is so speedy and requires minimal knife work. I've included the specific ingredients I used in our soup in parentheses. Vegan suggestions follow.

Heat a large saucepan over medium heat. Remove casings from sausage. Add sausage and garlic* to pan and cook about 5 minutes or until browned, stirring to crumble. Drain; return to pan.

While the sausage is browning, start a separate pot and boil water for pasta. Salt the water and cook the pasta until al dente.

Add broth and tomatoes to the saucepan with the sausage in it and bring to a boil over over high heat. Cover, reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in spinach until wilted.

Add desired amount of pasta to the bottom of a soup bowl and ladle sausage soup on top. Sprinkle each serving with cheese and basil.

*garlic not included in original recipe

Tovah! Mikus! Eric and Tiffany!! Try this recipe with Tofurky Italian Sausage and your preferred brand of vegetable broth. Sprinkle with nutritional yeast. I think you'll like it. Will you try it? You should.
